This little "detector" is just a small switch; it sends an "on" or "off" signal to the logic board. With age they can become less than reliable sending an always on or always off signal, rather than alternating properly. This results in perplexing errors related to whatever movement they're supposed to be detecting.

In the Compass Micro theory of starting from the cheapest solution and working up, this switch rates extremely high if it's anywhere near the offending mechanism.
