This little connector is actually part of the print head assembly. (Epson doesn't sell this part separately but this is an exact OEM replacement.) This connector relays the ink cartridge information to the main board via the print head circuitry. If its pins get bent or broken, the printer may give an error related to the ink cartridge. Replacing this part is no simple task! In most cases, it requires removing and disassembling the print head; an expensive, static sensitive component. Then, after reinstalling the print head, adjustments may be required to restore the original print quality.
